PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, Slow-Wave Sleep, Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep
Document Summary
Chapter 6: consciousness: the moment to moment awareness of ourselves and our environment. Is a state of consciousness , in which a person is constantly aware of his or her self as well as outside factors. 2 brain areas imprint for consciousness: thalamus: relays sensory information to cerebral cortex (if not working you go into a coma) Blindsight: can see but you are unaware that you brain is seeing the image. Contains thoughts and memories that are too painful for consciousness. Contents may seep into consciousness by accident. No supportive evidence that this is true it is a theory. Implicit: knowledge we are not typically aware (e. g. skills, classical conditioning) Automatic: processing that requires no consciousness e. g. : routine, well learned. Adaptive theory: says that organisms sleep for self preservation and to stay safe. Restorative theory : says that sleep restores our brain and bodies from predators. Sleep deprived rats take longer to heal a wound.
