Document Summary

Unconscious can work against us: too many stored memories can lead to psychological disorders. Knowledge stored in unconscious maintains their ability to influence how we think, feel, relate to others. Brain does not rest when sleeping: sleeping = sitting down/relaxing. Adaptive theory of sleep organisms sleep for the purpose of self- preservation, to keep away from predators that are more active at night: evolution outcome of self-preservation, our visual system is optimal in daylight. Sleep plays a role in growth process: pituitary gland releases growth hormones during sleep. Change in neuron activity during sleep: reticular formation, pons, forebrain region. Circadian rhythm: sustained period of wakefulness, not fully dependent on daylight cycles. Subtle patterns exist with circadian rhythm o body temperature: rises peaks, dips fatigue (usually twice, most alert late morning, young people tend to peak later in the day, elder people earlier, blood pressure, hormonesecretion o pain sensitivity. Can be disrupted: long-distance flights (crossing time zones) o irregularday/nightshifts.
