Rhetoric: presenting persuasive arguments to an intended audience. Rhetoric is rarely associated w scientific activity but all scientific writing is partially subjective bc it is a human enterprise. Ex apa style is a form of rhetoric. Scientific rhetoric is a carefully crafted exercise of presenting an argument to the scientific community. Scientific projects may be perceived as objective by lay community, but report writing is highly competitive + used for career advancement and thus there is a rhetorical component to all reports. Psychologists generally do not acknowledge the extent to which rhetoric influences their writing and argue that by following apa guidelines they are stating facts". U. s. psychologists began using formal codes for writing research papers in 1920s. Apa"s publication manual was introduced in 1952 and matches intention of natural science psych to establish laws of behaviour that transcend personal and social contexts.
