Romantic language derived from latin, french, italian, spanish, occitan (came from provence, Troubadours- told stories in occitan then french (sand and told stories); entertained aristocrats. Adventures of the knights and lady love. Crusades- long series and major fights to get to holy land, jerusalem, to get back the holy land which was previously in control by muslims. This does not mean the average knight was particularly chivalrous to all women or dutiful to. Stories idealize the knight and his daring deeds. Women are held in high regard- they are pure, they are beauty, they are goodness. Often had fairy tale settings (i. e. witches, magicians, potions, monsters, creatures) Hero often has some mysterious birth of some sort.
