Given slips of paper to determine who would play what role- both slips of paper said teacher. Actor would lie and say, oh i"m the learner . Subject had to be teacher, split off into 2 rooms they could talk but not see each other. Teacher gave learner a series of questions, teacher was told to give student shock for wrong answer. Shocks increase by an increment of 15 volts per wrong answer. Actual student was not receiving shock, but to make it seem authentic, research subject was given very weak shock at the beginning.
