Humans are divided into two sexes on thesis of biological features (chromosomes,sex organs, hormones, etc. ) Biological determinism: people"s dispositions, attitudes, behaviors, social roles, and other personal qualities are determined by their biology. Limited capacity to change who we are because we"re born a speci c way. Gender essentialism: males and females are born with different natures; school of thought that emphasized biological differences between men and women. E. g. sex roles (functionalism); sex = gender. Classical functionalist argue that sex roles are natural. Gender: a parallel, but not identical distinction between masculinity and femininity (feeling) Micro-level: individual identity and personality (e. g. gender identity) Macro-level: social institutions (e. g. sexual division of labour around care work or pink collar work) One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman. No biological, psychological, or economic fate determines the gure that the human female presents in society; it is civilization as a whole that produces this creature .
