Ethnic culture: the sum of traditions, practices, languages, symbols, values, ideologies, and material objects that are associated with a group of people. 3rd or 4th stage of globalization currently; marked by ethnic conflicts; clash of civilizations. Colonialism - assimilation; a sovereign nation dominates another nation, creating an infrastructure in the latter and eradicating their culture and replacing it with their own. Ethnic cleansing - e. g. isis, kurdish independence. English (later named british) rule from 1169 to 1922 (irish war of independence) over the whole island. Anglo-irish treaty (1922): partition of ireland into north and south. Southern ireland became a fully sovereign country in 1949 called the republic of. Northern ireland (1922-current): a colonial territory within great britain. Unionists: largely, but not exclusively, protestants that identify with british culture (including the english language). Promote the continued union between great britain and ireland. Dominant ethnic group, controls most of the wealth, dominates political scene.
