Document Summary
* main idea of this chapter is: nature vs. nurture (socialization. Cooley suggested we must interact with one another, this interaction is based on a set of shared symbols . Symbolic interactionists focus on meanings that emerge through social interactions. You can play more than one role in game-stage where as in play-stage, you only take on one role. Role taking comes in game stage because this when you understand and are able to take on and switch between multiple roles. Who we are is based on the roles we take on (this determines what we vales, how we act, etc. ) Mead: added that play is critical to development of self as it fosters taking the role of the other. Self is gradually attained (1st significant others and then generalized other as children learn to internalize the expectations of others) Essential to become cooperative members of human groups.
