ANTH 1120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Clifford Geertz, Anthology, Franz Boas
Document Summary
Physical-study human remains and trace evolutions of our species to monkeys. Linguistic-studying the past and present, language from back then. Approach is ethnographic field work, issue base and see what"s going on. Goal was to not focus on one issue but rather to generalize of a particular group. Used to be descriptive of a community or tribe. Cultural relativism is understanding others beliefs without judging. Key difference is a question of value, understanding others cultures, building knowledge, not privileging what you know as normal, but what they believe is normal. Way to approach the field and questions is based on experiences of them and their field rather than their own. Ethnography is study of one group and one issue. Ethnology is the work of doing comparison across different case studies. System of knowledge, beliefs, patterns shared by a group of people. Anthropology privileges the human being than everything else. Biologists go to a lab to do their work.
