Document Summary

Growth & development: increasing the number of cells. Tissue renewal & repair: replacing dead & or damaged cells. Mimitosis is in most cell of eukaryotic organisms. Meiosis is the division of sex (germ) cells like eggs & sperms. A sexual reproduction can result in rapid population growth. Can result in rapid growth of population. 2 types of eukaryotic cell division: mitosis: cell division of somatic (body) cells for growth repair, tissue renewal, reproduction, meiosis: cell division which creates germ cells (sperm, eggs), generated genetic diversity. Parent cell divides into 2 daughter cells (parent cells no longer exists after division) Chromosomes in humans & many other organisms occur in pairs. Total number of chromosomes if 2 sets (2n) For example: there are 23 different chromosomes in humans. Total number of chromosomes in human somatic cells. Number of different chromosomes= n (haploid number) Total number of chromosomes if 2 sets= 2n (diploid number) one from each parent.
