Document Summary

Biol 1001 symbiosis lecture week 3 (day 1) At the time these fossils form, germany was much further south therefore climate was different; large series of lakes, tropical forests: lakes led to great preservation. Shift in earth crust = release of co2: how old does something have to be to be considered a fossil, ten thousand years old. Fossil record: simple multicellular organisms (worms), then came terrestrial organisms, amphibians, etc. Organisms did become more complex over time. Fossils dated in relative to each other looking at the layers deposited: relative measure, not accurate. Certain layers had distinctive fossils only found in those layers. Boundaries became based on difference in the fossils found. Species species found in a layer can be used as a relative age marker (older, younger) Fossils used: wide-spread geographic range, easy to recognize, short-lived species (time on earth of species) because some are found in too many layers if its long-lived.
