BIOL 3200 Lecture 35: BIOL 3200 lecture 35
Document Summary
Many biologists believed environmental effects or changes of behaviour caused adaptive variations within an organism. This led to the use a(cid:374)d disuse of o(cid:396)ga(cid:374)s (cid:449)ithi(cid:374) a(cid:374) i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual"s lifeti(cid:373)e that (cid:272)ould affect later generations. The origin also talked about hereditary adaptive changes that could happen through the effect of use and disuse, or direction action of the environment. Neo-darwinism began in early 1880s, was led by august weismann: he denied inheritance of acquired characteristics ever occurred, great debates occurred between selectionists and those who believed in inheritance of acquired characteristics. In us, edward drinker cope and alpheus hyatt led neo-lamarckian school. Ernst haeckel was one of the defenders of neo-lamarckism. Inheritance of acquired characteristics would allow nature to become more progressive and directed than natural selection alone. Offered a softer, more hopeful vision of nature, without individual struggle that natural selection was based off of. Neo-lamarckism also had teleological and spiritual undertones.
