Health lec 13 complementary and alternative medicine. Complementary: herbal, massage therapy, acupuncture, homeopathic, it"s a whole range of things. As pharmacists, it"s natural health products such as vitamins, etc. may be part of our scope of practice. Extremely broad definition, things that it might capture that might not be complementary. Not really complementary, can"t just say anything that isn"t conventional. Are there double blind and rct for non-conventional medicine. What about vitamins, herbal medicine or therapist recommending acupuncture. Alternative medical systems, like in japan or like naturopath and homeopathic which offer alternatives. Biological based, most relevant to pharmacy and we"re asked questions on this. 10 year old data, so it"s probably close to 50% now, but 20% visited a cam provider. Most common cam provider is a chiropractor, massage therapist, then acupuncture. Most common in the west, then slightly less out east. Tend to be chronic conditions for complementary care.
