Ibsen went from writing plays about history and myth. This transfer from romantic to realist. Ibsen is afraid of scandal like hedda. Experienced scandal when father went bankrupt because of shady business dealings. Fathered a child at 18 by a servant never met child. Had an affair with young woman of 18 when he was in 50s. Could have been the inspiration for hedda. Which means, hedda is like a female version of ibsen. Started in western europe and england gained strength in industrial revolution. Began as a revolt against social and political aristocracy. Favoured simplicity and naturalness came from sources below. Children were romanticized seen as innocent and magical age. Favour feeling and emotion over logic and reason. Most popular form of drama in 19th century.
