Shifting Borders: Energy, Politics and Ukraine
Energy is always political.
Contemporary Geopolitical World Order
European Union
● London post WW2, five years after the world ends, people are still cleaning up after
the war
○ In Germany, women were left to clean up, there was a shortage of men and
those that did survive were imprisoned
○ In response to the destruction at the end of WW2, Europe set out to create a
group to ensure that there would never be war in Europe
○ Designed to achieve and ensure peace
○ Economic and political integration was the means for achieving peace
● In the 1950’s
○ Coal and Steel customs union formed
○ Customs Union: when two states agree that they will trade commodities
without taxing them
○ Italy, West Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands formed EU
○ Coal and Steel is necessary to build tanks and weapons of war, if we
relinquish the boarders on these commodities we will create a closer bond
○ Expands beyond coal and steel - subsidies agriculture to produce more,
common agricultural practice
● 1970’s
○ Ireland, UK, Denmark joins, Establish European Parliament, everyone gets to
vote for their European representative
○ European Regional Development Policy - Ireland is among the poorest, least
developed infrastructure, benefits the most from this policy.
● 1980’s
○ Greece, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar
○ Begin to see the reduction of border controls between those member states
○ If you are a citizen in the European community, it is easier for you to travel
● 1990’s
○ Sweden and Finland
○ All the member states get together and sign a treaty that brings massive
change
○ They call themselves the European Union starting in 1993
○ Issue an EU passport as well as the respective state’s passport, gave you the
right to travel among all the EU countries much easier
○ In 1991 signed treaty that Members of the European Union would world
towards common Social policies and foreign policies
● 2000’s
○ We get the Euro in 2001
○ European currency that not every country adopts
