Conflict theory can be traced by the 19th century (marx) Developed before the vietnam war, the counter culture of 20th century, and before civil war. Not conforming to societies norms (not fitting into a normative structure). A set of cultural (secular cultural) rules and principles. And in these rules and cultures are a set of expectations coded in these normative structures. Go to university, goal of aspiring, get education. Wealth, financial stability (number 1 goal according to book) (general goal, not the goals) middle class status. Middle class put off enjoyment until they succeed. When there is an elective affinity between the goals and the means, then our society will be stable and there will be no deviant behaviour. Lower class will accept the goals but reject the means to get the goals.
