HUMA 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Iolcos, Euripides, Dionysia
Document Summary
The medea by euripides: tragedy presented in great dionysia 431 bc. He did not betray her, he is marrying the daughter of the king solely out of preservation and protection of their children. He is only doing it so that they live well and never be short of anything. Analysis of jason: according to euripides, he is portrayed as a hero, who is rational, calm, logical, detached. Jason"s insensitivity knows no bounds: without the help of medea"s cunning and magic, jason never would"ve gotten the golden. He wouldn"t be a legendary hero at all. Ironically, he wouldn"t even be considered worthy of creon"s royal daughter. Medea is manipulating this weakness to work to her just like how everything works for her: nomos vs. physis, nomos is the greek term which describes man-made laws, order, civilization, control, stability, and power. It represents the men of greek: physis is the greek term which describes natural laws, instinct, chaos, irrationality and destruction.
