Yathrib was a diverse place, different religions tribes. 2 arab tribes: aws & khazraj (had been fighting & 2 years before they had stopped fighting due to exhaustion, stalemate but not formal peace agreement) 6 from khazraj came to muhammad and asked him to be an arbitrator. Jewish tribes: banu nadir, banu qaynuqa, banu qurayza. In 620 a year after khadijah died, those 6 delegates came to muhammad and be an arbitrator establish peace. Muhammad agreed, they accepted islam, he sent an instructor to teach people in yathrib about. 621: 5 people from khazraj + 7 more & 3 people from aws (gave an oath of allegiance to. Muhammad :pledge of women(bayat al-nisa): they pledge that they will follow islam, resist sinful things but did not pledge to defend him, this would later reform to what women would pledge), muhammad sent some more instructors with them.
