HUMA 1845 Lecture Notes - Lecture 34: Tawil
Document Summary
Ibn jarir al- abari (d. 923) is generally regarded as the most important figure in the formally established classical tradition of tafsir. His jami al-bayan is an encyclopedia of tafsir comments and opinions that had come into existence up to his time. As such, it is an indispensable source of traditionalist tafsir, which is made up of reports transmitted from early authorities. Al-tabari aims at being comprehensive rather than selective, which makes his book a treasure-trove of information, enabling later interpreters to select data on their own principles. He provides the names of authorities for the reports he cites but generally does not evaluate the chains of transmission. He often gives his opinion on the reports themselves, without putting any constraints on the reader. Qura"n tabari: first volume of the persian translation of the koran comment tabari, [tabriz] (iran), 1210 1225, Tabari not only transmits the traditions, but also discusses, whenever necessary, variant readings and grammatical points.
