The qur"anic meaning of salat can be derived from a number of verses that describe the characteristic features of worship and its ethical and social aims. Salat is obligatory prayer and should be distinguished from other devotional acts such as meditations or individual prayers, which are not required but are considered individual voluntary acts. In addition, while meditations and additional prayers as individual voluntary acts may be performed at any time the obligatory prayers. Salat must be performed at specific times. Muslim jurists agree that salat is obligatory for sane muslim men and women who have reached puberty. As a concept as well as a practice salat must reflect a deeply engrained attitude in muslims that manifests itself in acts of humility and patience. The qur"an states that believers can succeed in this life and the hereafter only if they humble themselves in their prayers ( successful are believers.
