Ade"s work, like christian petzold"s work, is concerned with the remaking of selfhood (individuality) in the current neoliberal time. Ade"s characters do not overtly engage with the dilemma of questions of nationality and german identity amidst foreign immigration, but their personal insecurities reflect a general instability. Through toni, viewers view the phenomenon of society still in the process of catching up to its capitalist conservation; a new way of life is being slapped over the old. Ines"s character shifts from more traditionally feminine to feminist.
