The director of western (2018), valeska grisebach is one of the lesser-known berlin school. Week 8 readings: film comment: western (2018) filmmakers. Sharp, jump-cutting montages cause confusion of action and place, and make western resemble an action film. Grisebach conveys a detached and topographical vision of western resemble an action film. Western reconsiders historic and contemporary ideas of masculinity, nationhood, and landscape. At other times, the film"s darker metaphors are of contested territory and imperialist empire are shown. The disoriented german workers embody western as a geopolitical coordinate, an imagination of nationhood in relation to an eastern other. Ex: the workers" proud hoisting up of the german flag, and their nationalist outbursts. Grisebach carefully selected the cast of german and bulgarian non-actors, whose characters closely mirror their real-life jobs and identities. Some of the actors had the same name as their characters. Grisebach questions how cinematic imagination shapes or informs one"s self-image or even self-performance.
