NATS 1610 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Bicarbonate Buffer System, Bicarbonate, Methyl Group
Document Summary
Water has a high heat capacity: meaning that a lot of temperature is required to change the temperature of water. Water that is evaporating from a surface like skin actually takes away heat with it, so that the surface actually gets cooler. Because of this, bodies of water freeze from the top to the bottom, so the marine life at the bottom of the water doesn"t freeze. It also creates a surface for animals like polar bears to walk on. Oh- causes basicity; the more oh- you have the more basic something is. Acids: are compounds that can lose or give a hydrogen ion (h+, acids add more h+ ions to solutions. Bases: compounds that can take or accept hydrogen ions (h+, bases lower the h+ concentration in solution because they take the h+ ions. The ph scale measures the concentration of h+ ions & tells us how acidic or basic something is.
