Document Summary

Lecture 22, cell mediated immune response, march 30th. T lymphocytes are part of the acquired immune response: they deal with cancerous cells, cells that are infected with bacteria and viruses, and other cells that are just damaged. They detect invaders that are hiding within cells, something the complement system and antibodies can"t do. Things like the compliment system don"t recognize that there are viruses hiding inside the body. There are t lymphocyte receptors on the t cell that recognize antigens that are presented to them so that they can know if a cell is infected or not. 4 types of t cell: cytotoxic: sometimes called cd8 cells, they destroy the host cell with the bad virus in it. They do cell to cell combat, like natural killer cells: helper: sometimes called cd4 cells, they secrete molecules called cytokines that help attract other cells to the cite of infection to help attack the virus.
