Nats 1840 - lecture 16 - state sponsored technological development. Both the private sector and the state have been involved in directing technological and scientific development over the years. Specifically focuses on privately and publicly run institutions. Governments tend to run and be influenced by more private/business. Most people believe that technology is primarily developed by private industry and scientific research is primarily driven by the state. However, as most scientific and technological development is done in the industrial context, science and technology are controlled for the most part by private interests, as most industry is in the private sector. Synthetic rubber was one solution to running out of natural resources. So when we can"t get natural resources we make synthetic products to substitute. Assume govt does research and private try to use research to make profit but govts do so as well.
