2 major civilisation in bronze age (minoan and micean) Minoan on crete - named as king of crete, minos. We know little of them, and did until 1920 (german archeologist), of scliellemen and brit archeo named arthur evans. Highlights - started in crete in 2000 bc, did not know who these people were, or even greek, left writing on linear a tablets, but remain untranslated. Lived in great stone palaces, probably bureaucratically organised. Great wealth and trading people (greeks tended to be great traders) Palace economies based on storage and distribution, foods and products were stored at palace, income sustained bureaucracy, villagers got rations. Micean on maineland greece, named after largest and strongest power on island, mycene. Other sites, hilos, sparta, but mycene major power (named in illiad, world of homer) Linear b tablets written docs translated in 1950, early form of greek, not based on alphabet and got from phenesians.
