POLS 2490 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Peloponnesian War, Sophos, Meletus
Document Summary
Studied aeonian works but he was an athenian. Grew up in the glory days of the athenian empire. He exclusively focused on moral philosophy, attracted a circle of followers such as plato. Socrates was a teacher, has a unique way of teaching, elenchos, a cross examination. The higher elites disapproved of his way of teaching. The sophos weren"t trusted because they undercut the traditional athenian values. Socrates isn"t offering a definition, he"s undercutting. He was tolerated but never really trusted. Socrates was corrupting the youth of athens with his probing, inquiring. This toleration changed largely because of the events of the peloponnesian war. The end of the war got him in trouble. Democracy was replaced by 30 tyrants and they ruled by oligarchy. While the democracy was restored, athens" empire was gone. When he official policy was restored, there was no retribution for those who supported the tyrants.
