Motivation has two components: drive or arousal: energy you have within you to attain some end goal, goal-directed behaviour: put drive forward in a particular direction. Why are you in university: drive-reduction theories can"t answer these questions because they don"t take incentives into account, incentives are positive or negative external stimuli that motivate behaviour. Drive theories explain how internal states push you towards something and emphasize homeostasis.
