Loudness- the subjective perceptual quality of sound related to pressure/intensity (db), but also depending on other things such as frequency. Psychometric: function of physical quantity and behaviour (shows one threshold) Psychophysicial function: function of two physical quantities (shows how threshold on one physical quantity varies as a function of the other. Loudness: affected by intensity, binaural vs monaural presentation (spatial integration), where the threshold is 6 db lower with 2 ears, duration of sound (temporal integration), threshold increases below 200ms. Spatial and temporal integration: any sensor must integrate signals across a certain range of space and time, longer integration provides greater sensitivity but lower acuity. Difference thresholds: difference thresholds vary with different frequencies (weber"s fraction becomes smaller as the frequency increases) Sound masking experiments (how one sound affects perception of another: tonal masking: how much one pure tone impairs the perception of another.
