Lecture 14
1. Isaac Newton
a. Used methods of observation, mathematical deduction, and
experimentation to verify is work in physics and astronomy.
b. Materialist - Extended the work of Galileo by showing that the
motion of all objects in the universe could be explained by his law
of gravitation.
c. Although Newton believed in God, he believed that God's will
could not be evoked as an explanation of any physical
phenomenon. Newton viewed the universe as a complex machine
that God had created, set in motion, and then abandoned. Deism
d. **World is governed by natural law – without exception
i. Natural laws are absolute, but our understanding is
imperfect.
ii. Science deals with probabilities.
e. Accepted Occam’s Razor.
f. Developed differential and integral calculus.
g. Developed the universal law of gravitation –Greatest
contribution.
h. Did pioneer work in optics
i. DID NOT believe the universe was too complex that only God
could understand it.
j. Everything can be explained in terms of:
i. Space, Time, Matter, Force
