Introduction to the course
-health psychology: subspecialty of psychology, specifically to the application of
psychological principles to the diagnosis and treatment of illness
-to promote and maintain health, prevent and treatment of illness
-clinical health psychology: helping people diagnosed with physical health symptoms to
maintain
-occupational health psychology: prevention and management of occupational stress,
injury prevention in the work place, wellness programs
-community health psychology: community wide needs in health care systems
-often the psychological problems dealt with are either contributing to the illness or caused by
the illness
-clinical psychologists have recognized that there are psychological consequences when
things become chronic, and behaviours that we do can contribute to getting those

-behavioural medicine: biomedical approach with behaviourism, concerned with the
relationship between health and behaviour, behavioural risk factors (bad diet, habits, etc.),
and preventions (via behavioural modifications)
-health psychology wants to promote wellness
•world health organization: healthy means being able to enjoy the desired quality of life,
state of complete mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being and not just the
prevention of disease
-psychosomatic medicine: underlying chronic emotional conflict being expressed in a
physical symptom (freudian)
