Most production was for use (even in slave societies such as rome) Commodities were exchanged ultimately to get other commodities (like money) Accumulation by dispossession colonialism: the taking or exploration of land, resources, and or cultural knowledge. It divorces people from their means of production. People are being forced off the land (peasants) because they"d rather have sheep as it is more profitable. Now there people are separated from their own means of production. This creates people willing to work, and generates more wealth; makes a merchant class. it concentrates those expropriated resources in the hands of a few. Early capitalism: the new merchant class now having access to surplus wealth (capital) and labour developed the putting out system: Production system in which the capitalist provide the raw materials and paid labourers by the piece. Workers did this work in their own home where they controlled the pace and method of production.
