Lecture 1: An introduction to BSNS 105
Regardless of where you see yourself in the future (lawyer, doctor, consultant, entrepreneur,
marketer, sales representative, politician, academic, farmer, etc.) in New Zealand, or anywhere in
the world,
Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and
working is art and good business is the best art.
- Andy Warhol
Its not JUST about the $$$ and increasing productivity; so what is it about?
Field of knowledge (theories)
Human resource management, operations
management, labour relations, organisational
behaviour, critical theory, international
management, strategic management, business
ethics, etc.
and practice (application)
People, decision making, processes,
structure, relationships, business contexts,
technology What we do and why we do
it that way!
The basics of Management and Organisations
* Management: the attainment of organisational goals in an effective and efficient manner through
planning, organising, leading and controlling organisational resources
* Organisation: A social entity that is goal directed and deliberately structured
When it works well, it is quite harmonious. When it doesnt, it is chaotic. For example
Otago were $2.35m in debt and forecasting a loss of $750,000
for 2012. Whether it was reckless or incompetent would hardly
seem to matter now - but the conclusion being reached is that
it was a lethal mixture of both. Not only was the spending out
of control but it's understood some of the accounting was
muddled - which is why it is believed $400,000 of unpaid
invoices were only realised late last year.
Good planning, control and
management of resources,
processes, systems, people
Stakeholder satisfaction
Performance: excellence
attained in all metrics
