Article: “College and Notions of Asian American”
Purpose of article:
·Kibria is exploring the negotiation of race and identity during the college years, focusing on the
development of approaches to the “Asian American” concept, in particular its meaning and
significance as a basis of affiliation and community. In short, Kibria is looking at how Asian
American as pan-ethnic and Korean American students. Kibria focuses on Asian American
students who did not participate in pan-Asian campus groups.
·Post-civil rights, since the 1960s, there continues to be a rise in the numbers of people of color
attending college, although this increase is not uniform across types of institutions or
affected groups of color.
·College campuses have been and continue to be an important place for discourse on race,
identity, racial equity, and integration (diversity)
·Kibria’s research on Asian American’s friendships indicates that many students argue that their
friendships with other Asian Americans “just happened”. Kibria nuances the process of being
lumped together in a pan-ethnic category, experiencing racialized stereotypes, and experiencing
racial rejection as factors that are implicated in these relationships “just happening”.
Pros and cons of having pan-ethnic categories:
oCons: lumps together diverse people with different backgrounds, histories, cultural
practices and beliefs, languages, etc
- Can also diminish cultural understandings
oPro: people can band together in solidarity/find unity based on common experiences
of how they are treated in a particular place/they can work together to promote a
common social agenda
-Allows people who are outside of the particular pan-ethnic category to learn
about them
