GOVT-130 FA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Vichy France, Party System, Centrist Alliance
Document Summary
For many in france, political parties have a negative reputation. This is partly due to the common belief that the collapse of previous republics was due to the irresponsible behavior of political parties. France was governed for a long time by an assembly regime, or party regime. This implies that political parties pursued their own self-interest at the expense of the common good. 3rd and 4th republics were destabilized by undisciplined parties and government irresponsibility, both of which threatened the presidency. Post-liberation government (1944-1946) took over after the fall of the vichy government. Headed by de gaulle, collapses after he resigns. Was against the re-emergence of party-led government. When de gaulle instituted the 5th republic, the system was specifically designed to reduce the influence of political parties by increasing presidential power. However, article iv of 5th republic constitution officially acknowledges that political parties and organizations can be formed and operated freely .
