Document Summary
French history can be divided into two distinct periods. Before and after the french revolution of 1789. Since then, france has experienced 13 constitutions and 5 republics. These constitutions have radically organized the french system for just over two centuries (monarchies, empires, autocracies, absolute republics, democratic autocracies, republics) Compared to the us and great britain which had one constitution over that time frame france can be described as unstable. The third republic has been the longest republic in french history. The fifth republic has provided considerable institutional stability and will prove strong enough withstand the calls for considerable changes in the foreseeable future according to elgie (providing stability that it has never seen before) The modern day french political system is usually taken to have begun in 1870 with the surrender of napoleon. Brought an end to the second empire and the end to bonapartist politics.
