3rd and 4th republics conception of republicanism rested on parliamentary supremacy. The parliament occupied the central role in the french decision making structure. With the onset of the 5th republic, the parliament of france, once among the most powerful in the world, became one of the weakest. Gaullists drafters of the 5th republic constitution wanted to harness the republic in order to achieve an efficient collaboration with the executive. 5th republic parliament emerged as a mere shadow of the ones before it. In terms of its size, structure and procedures, the 5th republic does not differ radically from the republics before it: bicameralism- traditional to french republic, in 49 of the 50 u. s. states, there is bicameralism. In the national assembly, there are 577 deputies. Deputies elected for a 5 year term by a two ballot system: operates with majority plurality system.
