Between the end of the war in europe until may of 1949, the allied powers reduced the size of. Germany and divided the remainder into four zones of military occupation. Established two new states out of these zones. Federal republic of germany (us, gb, and france); west germany. Most germans living in the post-war east germany had been expelled by soviet forces after. 1945 and they resettled in the german territory. Exiles who survived built new lives in what remained in the war-ravaged territory. Integration of millions of refugees into post-war society was a task facing the government in 1949. As well as the remainder of the pre-war reich, berlin was divided into four sectors. Each military commander exercised authority in their respective zone while an allied- control council was comprised of the four commanders. The council jointly made decisions that affected all of germany.
