Social influence- a change in someone"s cognition, attitude or behavior which has its origin in another person or group. Asch"s conformity studies- 76% conformed on at least one trial; tested the length of a line. Conformity- convergence of individual responses toward group norms- to go along with the group . Bystander effect- when other people are around, any individual is less likely to help. Diffusion of responsibility- as the number of bystanders at an emergency increases, each individual feels less responsible for taking action and is less likely to act. Public conformity- overt behavior that is consistent with group norms but is not privately accepted. Private conformity- private acceptance of group norms. Obedience- performance of an action in response to a direct order. To be liked (normative social influence)- we want to gain approval or avoid disapproval of other people (public conformity) To be right (informational social influence)- the behavior of other people provides useful information to us (private conformity)
