Social cognitive- inappropriate perception of environment or life events. Biological approach- insufficient excitatory neurotransmitters in the brain. Learned helplessness-uncontrollable stressors can lead to external locus of control -> depression. Attributional theory- internal, stable and global attributions for negative events. Brain atrophy hypothesis- brain scans show enlarged ventricles (cause or effect?) Psychotherapy-treating disorders using psychological methods; trained professional tries to help a client think differently, feel differently, behave differently, or all of the above; a talking relationship with a therapist. Freud- concept that childhood experiences can influence adult behavior & unconscious thoughts can affect conscious behaviors. He thought therapy should allow patients to experience/express sexual and aggressive driveto deal with unresolved conflicts. Free association- say a word and tell me the first thing that comes to mind . Manifest content- the part of the dream that we actually remember. Latent content- what the manifest content represents.
