ANT-4350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Materpiscis, Pit Viper, Aspidoscelis
Document Summary
Microbrachius - the earliest creatures to engage in penetrative sex. Materpiscis attenboroughi - 1st evidence we have of live birth. Aphids practice heterogamy: alternating sexual and asexual reproduction with alternating generations. Summer they give live birth asexually to males and females becuase there are plenty of resources. In winter they lay eggs of only females so they can reproduce asexually whenever the warmer months come around. Slime molds can reproduce sexually and asexually whenever they feel like. During times of stress and starvation, they send up a poof of sperm and reproduce asexually. The have a lower population density to they adapt to survive without needing males to reproduce. There are types of species that will reproduce asexually even when there are available males to mate with. Natural selection is the differential survival/reproduction of organisms as a function of their physical attributes. Sexual selection is selection arising through performance by one sex for traits exhibited in the other sex.
