When there is something written about when the piece was made. E. g. giorgio vasari wrote about the lives of artists. Time specific things included in the piece. Certain styles may be associated with certain time periods or cultures. E. g. french gothic cathedral (pointed roof) vs. italian cathedral (flat roof), despite the italian cathedral"s building having been built more recently, its style is actually older.
