How Genes Work-Chapter sixteen
I. The Central Dogma of molecular biology summarizes the flow of information in
cells. DNA RNA Proteins
A, Structural Genes are stretches of DNA that code for proteins.
II, The roles of Transcription and Translation
A. Transcription: the process of using a DNA template to make a complementary
RNA.
B. Translation: the process of using the information in mRNA to synthesize proteins
a) Interprets nucleotide “language” to amino acids.
DNA mRNA Proteins
III. Linking Genotypes to Phenotypes
A. An organism’s genotype is determined by the sequence of bases in its DNA
B. An organism’s phenotype is a product of the proteins it produces.
C. Alleles of the same gene differ in their DNA sequence.
D. Proteins produced by different alleles of the dame gene frequently differ in their
amino acid sequence.
IV. Exceptions to the central dogma
A. Many genes code for RNAs that do not function as mRNAs and are not
translated into proteins.
a) These RNAs perform important functions
b) Gene flow is DNA RNA
B. Sometimes information flows from RNA back to DNA
a) Some viruses contain reverse transcriptase
b) Synthesizes DNA from an RNA template
c) Gene flow is RNA DNA
V. The Genetic code
A. The genetic code specifies how a sequence of nucleotides codes for a sequence of
amino acids.
B. A group of three bases that specifies a particular amino acid is called a codon.
VI. Nature of the Genetic Code
A. One start codon (AUG) codes for methionine and signals where protein synthesis
starts.
B. Three stop codons (UGA, UAA, and UAG) signal the end of the protein-coding
sequence.
C. The other 60 codons code for amino acids.
