The hiring process can take 8-10 wks, sometimes even longer depending on the jurisdiction; feds can take over a year to be hired. Can"t discriminate based on sex, race, nat"l origin, etc. Minority officers; hispanic/bilingual officers are highly sought after. Women officers; proven to use deadly force less and more likely to de- escalate deadly or violent situations. Some large cities have blet classes offered through community colleges. Field training and probationary period (after hired, usually 16 wks) Probationary period lasts about a year, can be fired for any reason and don"t have appealing rights. Can be very expensive to hire an officer because of all of the above^^^ Greatest # of cops are assigned to patrol. Supposed to deter crime through visibility, even though that doesn"t really work.
