CHE-2201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Locant, Substituent, Newman Projection
Document Summary
Hydrocarbons: compounds that are only composed of hydrogen and carbon. All attachments are filled on the carbons. The suffix -ane is used for saturated hydrocarbons. The iupac gave a set of rules on how to name molecules. Find the parent chain - the longest consecutive chain of carbons. If there are more than one possible parent chain, choose the one with the most substituents attached. If the parent chain is cyclic (a ring of carbons), add the prefix cyclo" to the beginning of the parent chain name. Count the number of carbons in each side group and use the terms from. Table 4. 2 to name the substituents (same as the prefixes as before but they end in -yl instead of -ane) If there are more than one of the same substituent groups (two methyls) then you add a prefix di-, tri-, tetra- (these prefixes are not included in the alphabetizing) Number the longest carbon chain within the substituent.
