GLY-1104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Tibetan Plateau, Water Cycle, Himalayas
Document Summary
Hydrological cycle review: glaciers influence almost every aspect. Trough in ohio looks almost fluvial in aerial view. Snow/ ice accumulation > melting rate: cold, snowfall. Can drill into glaciers and date sediments and tell which season it was. Accumulation depends up on slopes: gentle slope so it can accumulate and also that don"t face directly into the sun usually, steep: snow slides downhill. Crevasse: fractures in the ice that form because of internal stresses in glacier as it moves: abundant at curves and at changes in slope. A lot of terms for glaciers are german/ french because most were defined in the alps. Covered in rocks and sediment: rock floor ground up pieces of rock ground up from below practically microscopic, large boulders, sediment can be blown on top or ground up, can carry huge boulders, gives glacial meltwater grey/green color. Glaciers: large masses of ice on land that show evidence of motion.
