Stream: water flowing at variable rates that travels through a single channel or through a number of interconnected channels at a variety of scales: alternative definition: body of water with a current that flows downhill within a channel. Delta: where sediment gest deposited grows towards the sea. River: large stream of considerable volume and with permanent or seasonal flow- factors: steepness of channel, supply of sediment, climate, tectonic history. Streams are conduits of moving water, driven by gravity, flowing from high to low: comes from: precipitation, snow melt, springs. Drains specific area and joins other streams draining other areas, forming drainage network. Discharge: amount of water flowing in a given time discharge = q: m / sec = q = stream depth x stream width x stream velocity. Drainage density- can influence response of a stream.
