The arts need to be strictly censored in plato"s ideal society because the arts needed to promote justice since justice was to be at the forefront of his society. Historical background: education in ancient greece consisted of both poetry and philosophy, the study of poetry and philosophy would have examined the same problems, so, there was competition between artists and philosophers. Poetry seeks understanding through example and case studies. Philosophers would argue that learning to imitate something (ex. a general) is no way to learn how to be that thing: to be a general is to understand the principles of military tactics. Philosophy is the study of abstract principles, so the study of poetry was considered more practical to the ancient greeks. Plato"s argument: main 2 points, all art is an imitation of nature, and cannot reveal the truth, all art appeals to emotion, not reason.
