Eating disorders affect people of all races, but more often in caucasian females. Anorexia nervosa ( psychological loss of appetite : restriction of energy intake relative to requirements significantly low weight, intense fear of gaining weight/being fat, disturbed body image, subtypes: restricting (dieting/fasting/exercise) versus purging. Purging: self-induced vomiting or the use of abusive laxatives. Bulimia nervosa ( psychological ox-hunger : recurrent episodes of binge eating, recurrent compensatory behavior (1+ time per week x 3 weeks) Compensatory behavior: an attempt to compensate or undo. Purging, exercise, food/fluid restriction, etc: self-evaluation unduly influenced by weight and shape, main reasons why people overeat: Intuitive eating: when somebody eats according to their body: eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full, appetite awareness training: people track their hunger and satiety. Binge eating disorder: recurrent episodes of binge eating. More food than normal in a short period of time, lack of control. Not normal overeating: episodes meet 3+ of the following symptoms:
