PSY-3215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Munsell Color System
Document Summary
Isaac newton named the colors of the rainbow. He experimented with the colors and prisms. If you passed red or blue through the prism, it would appear the same on the other side. White light is a combination of all wavelengths. Hue: the categorical dimension from red to violet (essentially just the colors) 200 steps (jnds) from red to violet. White pure wavelength takes 20 steps (jnds) Black white takes 500 steps (jnds) 200 x 20 x 500 = 2,000,000 possible colors on the visible spectrum. Spectral colors: colors that can be produced by a single wavelength on the visible spectrum. Non-spectral colors: colors that cannot be produced by a single wavelength on the visible spectrum, but can be produced by a mixture of wavelengths. Example: the color purple is a mixture of red wavelengths and blue wavelengths. Metamer: all possible ways to produce a particular color experience.
